Meal Plans

What is a Meal Plan?

Simply put a Meal Plan is pre-paid account that is loaded with Meal Swipes, and in most instances Flex Dollars, onto your Bronco ID card for campus dining. Currently Boise State University offers two types of Meal Plans; Weekly and Block. A Weekly Meal Plan is required for first-year students who live on campus and many others purchase Meal Plans for the convenience benefit and cost savings.

What are the differences between Weekly and Block Meal Plans?

Meal Swipes for the week are loaded each Sunday morning for Weekly Meal Plans. One swipe per meal period is allowed and any unused Swipes expire at midnight on Saturday. Block Meal Plan Meal Swipes are loaded at the time of purchase, can be used any time and expire one year from the date of purchase.

What is a Meal Swipe?

A Meal Swipe provides access to the all-you-care-to-eat Boise River Café or can be used for a meal replacement option at select locations.

What is a Meal Period?

Each day is divided into five Meal Periods; Breakfast (6:55A-11A, 10:30A on weekends), Lunch (11A-2P) or Weekend Brunch (10:30A-2P), Afternoon (2P-4P), Dinner (4P-9P) and Late Night (9P-12A). Those with a Weekly Meal Plan may use one Meal Swipe per Meal Period.

What is a Meal Replacement or Exchange?

What are Flex Dollars?

Each Weekly Meal Plan and the Buster Bronco Block Meal Plan come with a select amount of Flex Dollars. They are accepted at all campus retail food locations for any food purchase, good through the school year and additional Flex Dollars can be added at any time with the 10% discount.

What is a Guest Pass?

In addition to Meal Swipes and Flex Dollars, each Weekly Meal Plan comes with 16 Guest Passes per semester. These can be used in the same capacity as Meal Swipes for visiting family members and/or friends.

Meal Plan Accommodations

As stated in the Housing and Residence Life Housing and Dining License Agreement, all First Year students living on campus are required to have a residential meal plan, regardless of where they live. There may be rare instances when a student's dietary needs exceed the ability for University Dining to provide reasonable accommodations.

By law, students with disabilities do not have to self-disclose or register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC), Housing & Residence Life, or University Dining. If, however, students are seeking accommodations or adjustments (different
meal plan; exemption from meal plan requirement, etc.), they are encouraged to follow this process (all meal plan accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis).

 1. When eating in the Boise River Cafe and unable to find suitable options based on dietary restrictions, please contact a staff member to seek if other options are available.
2. Contact University Dining to schedule a meeting with appropriate staff members to discuss dietary restrictions and corresponding options.
3. If, in collaboration with a University Dining staff member, reasonable accommodations are unable to be made, the student must contact the Disability Resource Center and follow their documentation process.
4. Once the DRC has received all necessary documentation, they will notify Housing & Residence Life and University Dining with recommendations of reasonable accommodations to be made.
5. A Housing & Residence Life or University Dining staff member will notify the student of their specific accommodation via their Bronco email account within 2 business days of receiving the recommendation from the DRC, whenever possible. If University Dining is unable to make the accommodation in that 2 day period due to space availability/resources/etc., they will notify the applicant of the delay and next steps to expect. Every recommendation from the DRC will be looked at on a case by case basis.

Note: It is recommended students requesting reasonable accommodations do so as soon as they apply for housing.

Under the ADA, Boise State is considered a public accommodation and may not discriminate against people with disabilities and must provide equal access by removal of physical barriers, provision of auxiliary aides, and “make reasonable changes in policies, practices and procedures to avoid discrimination.” – Source: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)/
